That being said the software that comes with them is of zero interest to me. Indeed, many models will report the same serial NMEA 0813 data stream over their USB port that you would be working with on a dedicated module anyway and smaller units can be liberated of their enclosures, batteries and touch screens to provide your electronics project with a low-powered solution that is actually worth the price.

GPS devices are powerful embedded machines that incorporate everything you need for a useful portable computer: CPU/RAM, touch screens for user interaction, storage - often with external options, usually bluetooth and audio capabilities but most importantly they contain a GPS unit and can be obtained at thrift stores for sometimes as little as $3 while a usable but still low-quality GPS module meant for custom development that interacts by USB/serial/SPI tend to run CAD$20 and over at the time of writing.
